Summary
This position is responsible for designing, developing and maintaining the bill of materials of Special Purpose Vehicles for various applications like refuse removal vehicles, terminal tractors, various transport vehicles ranging from 10 ton GVM to 50 ton GVM such that customer requirements are met. This includes the design, development, verification, validation, production release and support of all components and subsystems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1) Analyzing and reducing design requirements to engineering specifications.
2) Applying fundamental engineering principles and verification techniques to the design of
systems/components to ensure performance that meets development specifications.
3) Generating and maintaining bills of materials and engineering documentation. Interpretation,
review and approval (where required) of vendor, fabrication and layout drawings etc.
4) Providing creative and technically feasible solutions for development projects, cost savings,
service issues, and product improvements.
5) Interfacing with Analysis, Test and Manufacturing Engineering to determine the most effective &
economical use of materials and manufacturing processes and to ensure validated designs.
6) Interfacing with the Product Regulation and Compliance staff to design vehicles that meet
government regulations, restrictions and codes.
7) Interfacing with Materials and Purchasing on new part design and sourcing as well as resourcing
of existing parts.
8) Providing design solutions for customer work orders.
9) Supporting production personnel with day-to-day production issues related to area of expertise.
10) Supporting prototype builds, verification and validation activities as required.
11) Utilizing design contractors as required. Provide design requirements and schedule, establish
priorities and review designs for correctness and completeness.
12) Other responsibilities as required.

Competencies and skills
Communication skills: Proficiency with verbal and written communication skills in English is required to support day-to-day interaction with colleagues, lead design reviews, dealing with suppliers etc.

Mathematical and associated skills: Proficiency with performing basic mathematical & trigonometric calculations and statistical analysis is required.

Reasoning ability: Proficiency with clearly formulating and articulating the reasoning behind design direction and decisions is required.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with MS Office software including MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint and MS Projects is required. Other skills as described in Education/Qualification and Experience.

Other considerations: This position requires the ability to effectively function in a fast paced environment with frequently changing priorities. The ability to meet timescales under the aforementioned conditions is essential. This position also calls for a strong team player with a "can do" attitude.

Education/Qualification and Experience
1) A degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology is highly desirable. If not, a combination of
courses in mechanical design, drafting and related experience is required. Proof of education
must be provided.
2) At least 3 years experience (6 years if the candidate does not have a degree in engineering
technology) within the automotive engineering environment. Experience in the design,
development and production support of medium and heavy duty trucks is preferred.
3) At least 3 year experience with a 3D CAD software package to design integrate various
components and subsystems in a vehicle layout. Experience with UG NX is highly desirable.
4) An understanding of fabrication and manufacturing processes, weld symbols, machining symbols,
etc. is highly desirable.

Work Environment
This position is in a fast paced working environment that requires multi-tasking and the ability to deal with frequently shifting priorities. Most of the duties will be performed in an office environment on a computer, but the position will be expected to perform duties on the production floor and prototype shop as required. International travelling from time to time for periods up to 3 weeks might also be required.
